Greenville University had a goal in mind on Saturday, and despite strong challenges in both the individual and team finishes, they accomplished their mission; walking away with both individual and team championships.
Greenville totaled 51 points as a team, extending their active streak to 10 consecutive conference titles. That mark equals the conference record for consecutive years with a championship. The Panthers actually won 11 straight, however there was no championship held in 1997. The four-point margin of victory for Greenville was the narrowest team win since 2010.
The Panthers also extended their streak of individual champions to eight after freshman Kaden Einhorn pulled away late for the victory. Einhorn was one of six runners in a lead group that held together for over half the race. In the end it came down to Einhorn and another freshman runner with Einhorn pulling out a two-second victory with a time of 26:51.
Although Greenville had two of the top four runners, their next runner did not finish until 14th place. Putting the pressure on the runners deeper in the lineup. With Luis Zavala crossing in 14th place the Panthers pushed hard for the team win with five of the next six runners crossing in Greenville racing bibs. It came down to Kyle Cooley and Chris Bandy pushing each other across the line, finishing less than a half-second apart, to secure the team victory.
Principia College nearly ended Greenville's reign, finishing with 55 team points. Principia was buoyed with four runners finishing betwen 5th and 12th place. Zach Proctor led Principia with a 5th place finish, completing the course in 27:18.
Eureka College finished 5th with 122 points. Cole Glover continued his impressive freshman campaign with a 2nd place SLIAC finish. Glover traded off-and-on the lead spot over the final lap, coming up just short of an individual title with a time of 26:53. His race still goes down as the best by a Red Devil runner at the SLIAC Championship; setting a new program record for best finish and tying the mark for best championship time with Cory Shoopman in the 2013 season.
Webster University was just behind with 59 points. The Gorloks were led by a third of a trio of freshmen in the conference, Simon Muthemba. Muthemba finished in 27:07, placing 3rd individually. Ethan Nieroda was not far off the pace, coming in 6th place with a time of 27:21.
Spalding University took 4th place with 105 points. Wyatt Frye and Tobias Rice held spots in the lead group for most of the race before crossing in 10th and 13th place respectively.
Finishing 6th with 152 points was Blackburn College. The Beavers were led by Sam Burrows' 20th place finish, completing the course in a time of 30:10.
Lyon College was 7th with 186 points. Collin Orvin led the Scots with a time of 31:51, finishing 29th overall.
MUW totaled 212 points thanks to Jarvis Sellers. Sellers set a new program record the best time at the conference championship, finishing in 30:14. His 21st place finish is 32 spots better than the previous Owl program best while the team has its highest championship finish as well.
Westminster College did not filed a full team but Levi Brandt did compete individually for the Blue Jays. Brandt finished in 33:32, coming in 42nd place.
