Pioneers Fight Back for Championship

The 2026 SLIAC Men's Golf Championship was full of ups and downs, particularly for Grinnell College. The three-day tournament began with sunny weather before weather forced a shortened day two, forcing the conclusion of the second round and the final round on a chilly day three. That varying schedule and weather did not both Grinnell College, who fought their own ups and downs en route to winning the program's first-ever SLIAC Men's Golf Championship. The Pioneers were the day one leaders after putting up a 290 on Sunday. However they fell behind in round two after carding a 301, trailing leading and two-time defending champion MUW by three strokes. But the Pioneers responded by carding a 295 in the third and final round, tying for the best score in the final round. Grinnell finished the tournament with an 886, 55 strokes better than last year's showing.

Spencer Moody sparked the charge for the Pioneers, carding two rounds under par. He opened the tournament with a 71 and closed it out with a 70. Moody finished the tournament with 10 birdies and an eagle and tied for 2nd individually. Josh Udelson also had a strong tournament, tying for 6th with a 220.

MUW sat eight strokes back after round one but finished round two with a 290, tying for the lowest round of the championship, to get back into contention. The Owls held the lead early on in the third round but 14 bogies and a double bogie on the back nine eliminated their lead. Cameron James was able to walk away as the individual champion, finishing with a 214 after putting up the second best round in championship history with a 66 in round two. The Owls closed out the three rounds with a team score of 889.

Lake Forest College finished 3rd with an 892, putting up their lowest score in the opening round with a 292. Tyler Wengronowitz closed out the tournament with his lowest round, a 70, and finished tied for 2nd overall with a 216. Tyler Schick finished just outside the top ten with a 222, carding a below par round of 70 on day one.

Lyon College finished 4th overall with a 901. John Blake Turner paced the Scots with a 221, finishing 10th overall while Hunter Beasley tied for 12th with a 224.

Coming in 5th was Webster University with a 910. Nico Marin led the Gorloks with a 220, tying for 6th individually. 

Knox College finished 6th with a 916 with Pranav Nandakumar leading the way. He carded a 220, tying for 6th. 

Spalding University tied for 7th with a 921.Brady Westwood led the Golden Eagles with a 225, tying for 14th overall. Westwood's best round came in round two with a 73.

Also finishing 7th was Illinois College with their best round coming on the first day with a 300. Teddy Walbaum was the team's top scorer, tying for 20th with a 229.

Monmouth College carded a 943 to place 9th. Connor Watson was among the leaders, finishing 4th with a 218; carding a low round of 71.

Westminster College was 10th with a 983. Aidan Fonke used a low round of 70 to set up his success this week, finishing tied for 4th with a 218.

Blackburn College had a three-round total of 1037 with Kevin Hall leading the team. Hall placed 37th with a 236 while Talon Horton finished 43rd with a 245.

Greenville University, in its first year as a program, finished 12th with a team score of 1100. John Heater V was the team's top performer, finishing 46th with a 251.

Eureka College concluded the tournament with a score of 1207. Owen Peich led the team with a 306, finishing 59th overall.
