Greenville University joins an elite list of programs to three-peat as SLIAC Softball Champions. This is the second time the Greenville program has won three consecutive conference titles, following a stretch from 2016-18, and just the fourth time there has been a three-peat champ. The other two times were Westminster College from 1991-92 and Fontbonne University from 2010-15.
This year's edition of Panther conference champions had to rally in a winner-take-all championship game, topping Spalding University 8-7 after falling 11-2 in the first game of the day.
Greenville took a quick lead with a run in the bottom of the first but Spalding answered right back with a pair of runs in the second inning including an RBI single by Carsyn Sidebottom. The Panthers plated a run in each of the next two innings including a solo home run from Kelsey Martlage, to take a 3-2 lead.
Spalding drew even in the fourth on a Braeanna Billups RBI single and grabbed the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Greenville put another run on the board in the bottom of the frame with Spalding getting that run back in the top of the sixth on a RBI single from Morgan Gambrell.
Greenville saved their best inning for the sixth, plating three runs on two hits. Gambrell delivered again to start the rally while Rylee Bloomer and Ashleyn Colvis also drove in runs to tie the game up at 7-7.
Spalding went down three in a row in the top of the seventh, with Greenville coming to bat in the bottom half with a chance to walk-it off. A lead-off walk put the winning run on base and after a stolen base, a single by Emerald Watson ended the game for a final score of 8-7 in favor of the Panthers.
