Ethan Nieroda and Greenville University made SLIAC history on Saturday at the 2026 SLIAC Men's Cross Country Championship. Nieorda became the first runner from Webster University to capture the individual title while Greenville won a conference title for a conference record setting 11th consecutive year.
Nieroda came out on top of a strong group of lead runners that saw five runners finishing within 20-seconds of each of each other. Tobias Rice, from Spalding University, led the pack early on until Nieroda passed him on the 3K lap. It was Eureka's Bailey Webster that grabbed the lead as the pack completed 5K; pushing to become the first Red Devil to win the title. However Nieroda outlasted the pack and pulled away on the final kick, crossing the finish line in 26:34. With Nieroda's win he becomes the first Gorlok to win an individual title; finally cracking through for the program after having three previous runner-ups. His teammate Simon Muthemba was among the pack leaders, placing 4th with a time of 26:53.
Greenville finished with 44 points, extending their championship streak to 11 years. That marks the first time in conference history a program has won in 11 straight years. The all-time record for consecutive championships is 12, by Greenville, however that streak was interrupted in 1997 when there was no championship held. Although the highest finisher for the Panthers was 7th place, it was their depth that carried them to another title. Einhorn, last year's individual champion, was the highest finisher for Greenville; crossing in 27:10. Hunter Malan was just behind with Mason Clayton, Luis Zavala, and Kyle Cooley following shortly after; giving the Panthers five runners in the top 13.
Principia College placed 3rd with 63 points, strengthened by the pair of Holland Thomas and Kennett Rampley. Thomas placed 3rd overall with a time of 26:42 while Rampley finished 5th in 27:00.
Also having a memorable day was the Blackburn College program; finishing 4th with 119 points. That marks the program's best finish at the championship since 2007. Their biggest headline however may have been the performance by freshman Marshall Garwood. Garwood finished 16th overall with a time of 28:44, becoming the highest finisher by a Beaver since 2001.
Eureka College came in 5th in the team standings with 132 points. Webster capped his Red Devil career with a second-place finish, crossing in 26:36. Webster is just the second Red Devil in program history to finish in the runner-up spot, but it is the second consecutive season that has been accomplished for the program.
Lyon College finished with 145 points. Elijah Benton led Lyon with a time of 28:20, finishing 12th individually; the highest finish by a Scot since joining the SLIAC and equaling the program championship record time.
MUW tallied 169 points as Jarvis Sellers bettered his career best finish by seven spots, placing 14th this year with a time of 28:36. That sets new program marks for both best finish and championship time.
Spalding University and Eureka College did not have team scores but each had runners competing as individuals. Tobias Rice led Spalding with his 6th place showing, finishing in 27:06. Levi Brandt led Westminster with a time of 32:38.
