SLIAC Volleyball Tournament Preview

The 2015 SLIAC Volleyball Tournament will feature Greenville College, Fontbone University, Webster University, and Westminster College. 

Tournament At A Glance
The 2015 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament will be this weekend with all three matches taking place on Saturday, November 7 in Greenville, Ill. The tournament field will include Greenville College, Fontbonne University, Webster University, and Westminster College.

Match 1 - #1 Greenville vs. #4 Fontbonne at 2 p.m.
Match 2 - #2 Westminster vs. #3 Webster at 4 p.m.
Championship Match- Winner of Match 1 vs. Winner of Match 2, at 7p.m.

Greenville College "Panthers"
Greenville secured the top seed in the tournament by finishing the regular season with a 17-1 SLIAC record, going 22-7 overall. It marked their sixth consecutive 20 win season and third consecutive outright SLIAC regular season title. The Panthers enter the tournament on a seven match winning streak. Greenville is hitting .218 as a team, second best in the league, and average 11.87 kills per set. They also finished first in blocks per set this season in the SLIAC. Sophomore Allyson Mitchell leads a strong trio, finishing with 326 kills. Junior Savannah Sells added 237 kills and freshman Riley Hannula finished with 209 kills. Senior Jamie Schollenbruch averaged 5.27 digs per set while junior Kirsten Laune averages 8.67 assists per set, second in the league.

Fontbonne University "Griffins"
Fontbonne won when they needed to, securing their position in the tournament field in the final weekend of the regular season. The Griffins went 13-18 overall and 11-7 in conference action. Fontbonne secured their spot into the tournament with a win over Eureka and have won two of their last three matches. Fontbonne is hitting .140 as a team this season, sixth best in the SLIAC, and averaged 10.38 kills per set. They are led by junior Kersten McDonough, who led the conference in kills with 449 this year. Madeline Stadler, a junior, finished second in the league in digs with 5.07 per set while also recording 35 service aces.

Webster University "Gorloks"
Webster finished the regular season with a 16-17 overall record and a 14-4 mark in the SLIAC. The Gorloks will be looking to reverse their current trend which has seen them go just 2-7 in their last nine, although the two wins have occurred in the last three matches. Webster is averaging 11.62 kills per set this season, third best in the SLIAC, and hit .180 as a team. A strong overall defensive team, the Gorloks were second in the league in digs at 17.88 per set. Offensively the Gorloks were led by the duo of junior Jory Siebenmorgen, who hit .258 with 319 kills, and senior Rachel Nelson, who finished with 258 kills and was second in the SLIAC in total blocks with 100. Freshmen Kelsey Hamann and Jilli Zimpfer combined to average 8.51 assists per set.

Westminster College "Blue Jays"
Westminster was 21-11 overall and 16-2 in the SLIAC this year, grabbing the #2 seed in the tournament. The Blue Jays had an 11 match winning streak at one point this season and enter the weekend off a win over MacMurray. The Blue Jays averaged 11.78 kills per set this season, hitting .182 as a team. The balanced attack is led by sophomore Hannah Marshall. Marshall set a school record for kills this season with 401 and also led the SLIAC in service aces with 77. Amanda Kiso, a junior, hit an impressive .351 while finishing with 252 kills and 77 total blocks. Junior setter Kayla Reeg led the conference in assists at 9.80 per set while freshman Bridget Ringwald led the team in digs with 447. 

Championship Notes

  • All four teams in this year's tournament have won the SLIAC Tournament at least once in program history.
  • Webster leads the way with 12 titles, including the last four years.
  • Fontbonne has won five titles, the last coming in 2004.
  • Westminster has two SLIAC Tournament titles, coming in 1996 and 1998.
  • Greenville has one tournament title, winning it all in 2010.
  • This year Greenville captured the SLIAC regular season title, marking the sixth consecutive season they have won at least a share of the title; setting a new conference record.
  • Westminster has 21 wins this season, marking their most wins since 2001.
  • Greenville went 5-1 against the tournament field this season.
  • Webster enters the tournament having won the last four titles, a conference record.
  • Fontbonne recorded 11 conference wins this season, their most since 2007; and will be making their first tournament berth since 2009.
