SLIAC Players of the Week - October 2

Fontbonne University dominated this week's SLIAC Players of the Week selections with four Griffins grabbing weekly honors. Fontbonne is represented by Jordan Alberici, Daniele Caruso, Blake Smugala, and Meredith Wendt. Also picking up weekly honors are Alexis Moore and Olivia Wall from MacMurray College, Meghan Illig from Webster University, and Andrew Sharp from Greenville University.

 

SLIAC MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - OCT. 2

Blake Smugala, Fontbonne University

Smugala, a junior midfielder, helped the Griffins to a pair of wins last week including a 6-0 victory over Eureka in their conference opener. Smugala tallied the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win over Harris-Stowe. Two days later he netted another game-winner, this time against Eureka in a 6-0 win.

   

SLIAC MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - OCT. 2

Jordan Alberici, Fontbonne University

Alberici, a senior goalkeeper, moved his record to 5-0 on the season after picking up two wins last week in net for the Griffins. Alberici recorded a shutout with two saves in a win over Harris-Stowe. He continued his scoreless week with another 45-minutes of goal free minutes in net in a win over Eureka.

   

SLIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - OCT. 2

Meredith Wendt, Fontbonne University

Wendt, a senior forward from Troy, Ill., powered the Griffins to their first three-game winning streak of the season. In three games she totaled five goals and two assists for 12 total points. She netted two goals against Oakland City and added a goal, including the game-winner, and an assist against Harris-Stowe. In her team's conference-opening win against Eureka Wendt recorded two goals and an assist. 

   

SLIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - OCT. 2

Daniele Caruso, Fontbonne University

Caruso, a junior defender from St. Louis, Mo., helped the Griffins win three games last week; their first winning streak this season. With Caruso leading the defense the Griffins allowed just two goals over three games, including an average of just four shots on goal per game. In addition, she added two assists on the week.

   

SLIAC VOLLEYBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - OCT. 2

Olivia Wall, MacMurray College

Wall, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., was the go-to player for the Highlanders as they went 3-1 on the week. Wall had two matches with over 20 kills and averaged 5.5 kills per set. She had a high of 27 kills in a win over Knox and followed with 14 kills against Robert Morris-Springfield while hitting .591 in the match. On the week Wall also averaged 3.8 digs per set while finishing with a .236 hitting percentage.

   

SLIAC VOLLEYBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - OCT. 2

Alexis Moore, MacMurray College

Moore, a sophomore from Winchester, Ill., was key in her team's 3-1 record last week. Moore tallied 96 digs over four matches, averaging 6.4 digs per set. She had a high of 33 digs in a win over Knox and followed with three more double-digit dig performances including a pair of matches against conference foes with at least 20 digs.

   

SLIAC MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY PLAYER OF THE WEEK - OCT. 2

Andrew Sharp, Greenville University

Sharp, a junior from Altamont, Ill., is honored with the weekly award after setting a season-best time in the 8K at the H.W. Wright Classic. Sharp completed the course in a time of 25:22, his best time in nearly two years and finished 11th overall in a field of 118 runners.

   

SLIAC WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY PLAYER OF THE WEEK - OCT. 2

Meghan Illig, Webster University

Illig, a senior from St. Louis, Mo., improved upon her personal best time at the Greater Louisville Classic. Illig completed the 5K race in a time of 20:07, cutting off over one-minute from her previous best time at the course. Illig finished 32nd out of 265 runners.

Other Notables: 

  • Maria Cline, Blackburn College (Women's Soccer) Cline recorded 11 saves in a loss against Illinois College; maintaining her conference-leading save total.
  • Anna Crank, Eureka College (Volleyball) Had three double-double matches last week including 19 kills and 13 digs against Westminster.
  • Michael Hansen, Eureka College (Men's Soccer) Hansen tallied both of the Red Devils goals in their 2-1 win over Emmaus, marking the team's first win of the 2017 season.
  • Adam Jones, Greenville University (Men's Soccer) Jones had a roll in all five of his team's goals in a 5-0 win over MacMurray, recording two goals and three assists. 
  • Caitlin Miller, Eureka College (Volleyball) Miller tallied 10 total blocks in a five-set match against Westminster.
  • Allyson Mitchell, Greenville University (Volleyball) Mitchell averaged 4.7 kills per set over three matches last week including a high of 21 in a sweep of Eureka.
  • Claudia Spivey, Spalding University (Volleyball) Spivey hit .517 with 17 kills in a win over Fontbonne.
  • Paige Townsend, Westminster College (Women's Soccer) Townsend exploded for eight points in a 6-0 win over Blackburn including netting a hat-trick.
  • Koti Weaver, Spalding University (Volleyball) Weaver finished with 23 digs in her team's 3-1 victory over Fontbonne. 
  • Shane Witters Hicks, Principia College (Men's Cross Country) Witters Hicks captured another first-place finish this fall, taking first at the Wisconsin Lutheran Warrior Invite.
